As the defending state champions, the Maize (Kan.) baseball team had a target on its back throughout the season. After dropping only one game during the regular season, the Eagles entered the Kansas Class 6A state tournament as the top seed.
Blue Valley North (Overland Park, Kan.) managed one run against Maize starter Craig Nicks before Nicks settled in. Predictably, the Eagles, who came from behind to win several games this season, mounted a rally against the Mustangs. A baserunning blunder and the inability to come through with a clutch hit doomed the Eagles, however, and North sent Maize home early with a 1-0 win.
After the game, Maize coach Rocky Helm addressed his disappointed team. In addition to thanking his seniors, Helm reemphasized the importance of playing smart baseball. Good decision-making and solid fundamentals are what helped Maize return to the state tournament. It only took one game for the Eagles to see the consequences of mental mistakes.
