After a team dinner of pulled pork and macaroni, Maize (Kan.) baseball coach Rocky Helm gathers his team together for a scouting report on the Eagles’ quarterfinal opponent, Blue Valley North.
The information available about the Mustangs is scarce – is their starting pitcher a lefty or a righty? -- but Helm shares what he knows in hopes that it might benefit his team the next day. The longtime coach delivered similar scouting reports last season, when Maize capped off an undefeated season with a state title.
Helm is big on preparation. It’s one of the reasons he has invited several members of the Maize junior varsity squad on the trip. These players won’t suit up for the tournament, but they’ll get a taste of what to expect. The experience will help them feel more prepared when, Helm hopes, they make a return trip or two to Lawrence over the next few years.
Maize arrived in Lawrence with every intention of defending its state title, and Helm knows sthey’re capable of doing so. His take-home message to his players on the eve of their quarterfinal game was simple: win, lose or draw, go down with a fight.
