Armed with a 97 mph fastball and a major league pedigree, Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) senior right-hander and Gatorade National Player of the Year Lance McCullers Jr. has a decision to make this summer: go to Florida or start his professional career.
During the season, though, McCullers was focused on one thing and one thing only: leading the Tigers to a state title.
Every start McCullers makes comes under the watchful eyes—and radar guns—of major league scouts. He’s fortunate to have a father—Lance McCullers Sr.—who pitched seven years in the majors after being drafted out of rival Tampa Catholic in 1982, and a pitching coach—Geoff Goetz—who was the No. 6 overall pick in the 1997 MLB Draft following a standout career at Jesuit.
By the time he finishes his pregame warmup, which includes loosening up by throwing a softball and sitting down to discuss the night’s game with coach Goetz, McCullers is ready to dominate. More often than not, he does.
