A 136-pitch outing from senior Lance McCullers Jr. in the regional final wasn’t exactly how Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) envisioned advancing to the Class 5A state semifinal. That’s what it took, though, as the Tigers overcame an early deficit to defeat Lake Wales (Lake Wales, Fla.)
McCullers’ recovery in the days that followed was especially important, not only because of the heavy workload his arm endured, but also because of the stakes of his next start, the final one of his high school career.
Team trainer Chris Smith, whose experience includes a stint on the training staff of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, helped McCullers prepare for the state semi-final game. Smith applied electrical stimulation, which aids in recovery, to McCullers’ arm, and the Jesuit ace ran and iced his arm more than usual.
McCullers, who has his professional career to think about, also rested an extra day before he resumed throwing. While this disrupted his regular routine, it was the only way to ensure he would be physically ready to go.
