Jesuit (Fla.) ace Lance McCullers Jr. delivers for Tigers in state semifinal

All-USA POY pitches six shutout innings against Plantation-American Heritage

Winning Formula Home

Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) ace Lance McCullers Jr. was brilliant. His counterpart, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) righthander Shaun Anderson, was just as good. The Florida Class 5A state semifinal was a classic pitchers’ duel.

McCullers, who threw 136 pitches against Lake Wales (Lake Wales, Fla.) in the regional final one week earlier, was as dominant as ever against the Patriots. The less heralded Anderson kept the Tigers from mounting much of an offensive attack.

The game was scoreless after six innings, when McCullers, who allowed five hits and struck out nine, was lifted after throwing 93 pitches. The Tigers’ ace didn’t earn a decision in his final high school start, but he could be proud of his performance.

The semifinal would be decided in extra innings. Check back tomorrow to see how it ended.
