The D.C. Everest girls basketball team opened the season with a bang, rolling to an easy 62-35 nonconference victory over West De Pere on Tuesday night at the Everest Fieldhouse.
"I thought it was obviously good to see," Everest coach Matt Bullis said of his team's performance. "It's always good to get a win and it was also good because we're pretty young with five sophomores and a couple of juniors that didn't get a lot of time last year."
The Evergreens got nearly all the offense they needed from seniors Lauren Anklam and Paige Day, who combined for 33 points. Anklam pumped in a game-high 18 points, while Day added 15, including a 7 for 8 performance from the line.
"We have three very capable seniors," Bullis said. "Zo (Brianna Ziolkowski) didn't score a lot tonight, but she is capable of doing it and led us in several games down the stretch last season."
The Evergreens bolted to a 19-7 first-quarter lead and stretched their advantage to 16 at halftime and 23 after three quarters.
"The way we want to play is more up tempo with a lot of pressure, so we have to keep a lot of fresh bodies in there," said Bullis, who had nine players score in the game. "I wasn't sure how we would do after six practices and a scrimmage, but we did a nice job."
