Roundup: TU, TW pick up wins at THC

The Tulare Union Redskins are looking like a team that is ready to assume the throne as Tulare County's top boys basketball team, as they smashed another foe during the 20th annual Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic at Sim Iness Gymnasium.

Keonta Vernon scored a game-high 34 points for Tulare Union (7-2). Jonathon Parreira had a career-high 16 points, and Oscar Reyes added 14 points.

"Very happy with how the team is playing," Tulare Union coach Mark Hatton said. "We played Central close in a loss, we played tough against Central. We're playing well. We just have to get healthy. We're missing a few players, so we need to get them back."

Tulare Union will host CVC at 7:30 p.m. today. The winner advances to Saturday's championship game.

Gavin Mann had a team-high 16 points for Lindsay (7-4).

Tulare Western 54, Bakersfield Christian 47: The Mustangs recorded their first win of the season by taking down the Eagles at the Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic.

Robin DeShazer had 17 points to lead Tulare Western (1-7). Vince Caporale added nine points, and Kobe Portillo had eight points.

"It's big for these guys. They've worked so hard. They deserved this win," Tulare Western coach Keith Rickard said of his squad. "They did a great job taking care of the ball. ... It's good to get this monkey off our backs."

Tulare Western hosts Mt. Whitney at 7:30 p.m. today.

Mt. Whitney 58, Cesar Chavez 40: The Pioneers improved to 2-0 in the Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic with a win over the Titans at Tulare Western.

Garabed Kalanjian had 17 points and nine rebounds for Mt. Whitney (2-3). Turner Nelson and Colton Dahlenburg each had 11 points for the Pioneers.

CVC 63, Woodlake 31: Alex te Velde scored a game-high 15 points for the Cavaliers in their win over the Tigers at the Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic.

CVC (4-3) is 2-0 in the tournament. Austin Moons and Austin Bons each had seven points for the Cavaliers.

Jacob Rodriguez had 11 points for Woodlake.

Central 103, Mission Oak 84: The Grizzlies handed the Hawks their first loss of the season in the Holiday Invitational Tournament in Fresno.

Central scored at least 22 points in every quarter. The Grizzlies had a 51-45 lead at halftime, and obtained some breathing room by outscoring Mission Oak 27-16 in the third quarter.

Bobby Alvarado had 26 points for Mission Oak (4-1). Blake Shannon added 19 points, and Kollan Mundley scored 16 points.

Exeter 61, Golden West 35: Caleb Harden had 16 points for the Monarchs in their Dinuba Holiday Tournament victory over the Trailblazers. Jordan Bayne had 13 points for Exeter. Anthony Chandler scored eight points for Golden West.

Dinuba 68, Corcoran 50: The Emperors improved to 8-0. Ernesto Ruiz had 21 points.

Boys Soccer

Mission Oak 2, CVC 0: The Hawks blanked the Cavaliers in a nonleague game in Visalia.

Armando Gonzalez and Justin Herrera each scored for Mission Oak (7-4)

Golden West 3, Woodlake 1: The Trailblazers (9-2-1) used two goals less than 10 minutes apart to beat the Tigers (2-6-1). Julian Tapia scored first in the 20th minute. Christian Ibarra doubled the lead with a goal eight minutes later. Woodlake cut the lead in half before the break. Elijah Salazar sealed the win with Golden West's third goal in the 71st minute.

Girls Soccer

CVC 2, Mission Oak 1: Taylor Van Den Berg scored two goals in the first half to lead the Cavaliers over the Hawks in a nonleague game in Tulare.

CVC improved to 2-6-2 . Liz Cui scored for Mission Oak (5-4-2).
