Roundup: Redwood stops Delano in Visalia Invitational opener

The Redwood Rangers downed the Delano Tigers 59-44 in opening-night action at the 22nd annual Visalia Invitational Wednesday night at Redwood High School.

Jasmine Black scored a team-high 25 points for Redwood (2-1). Corissa Turley scored 13 points, and Jordan Surfus added 11 points.

"Obviously pleased with how we played," Redwood coach Jason Black said. "We're in a bracket where we feel we can get into the championship game."

Redwood hosts Strathmore at 7:30 p.m. today. Redwood hosts El Diamante at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Strathmore 47, El Diamante 35: Abby Valle led the Spartans (2-0) with 19 points and seven rebounds in a 47-35 victory over the Miners (0-2) at the Visalia Invitational.

Dnay Gonzalez added 10 points for Strathmore. Katie Reeves led El Diamante with 14.

The Spartans outscored the Miners 15-6 in the second quarter after the two sides finished the opening period tied 9-9. They pushed their lead to 40-25 in the third frame before closing out the 12-point win.

Up next for Strathmore in Pool A is Redwood at 7:30 p.m. today.

"This is a big test for us," head coach Richard Miranda said. "I just hope we can keep it competitive and it doesn't get too crazy out there."

Girls Soccer

Mission Oak 4, El Diamante 1: The Hawks defeated the Miners in a nonleague match in Visalia.

Sophomore Liz Cui scored all four goals for Mission Oak (1-1).

"Overall, it's a great win," Mission Oak coach John Pimentel said. "A win like this shows the girls that they can play the elite programs in our area and win. They walked off the field [Wednesday] with a confidence knowing that they can play the elite teams.

Mt. Whitney 4, Sanger 2: The Pioneers improved to 2-0 with a nonleague win over the Apaches in Visalia.

Viviana Benitez, Rianna Chavez, Jenna Shelton and Ellie Warmerdam each scored for Mt. Whitney.

Boys Soccer

Mission Oak 4, El Diamante 3: Another run of three unanswered goals to begin second-half play propelled the Hawks to a nonleague win over the Miners at Mission Oak High School.

On Tuesday, Mission Oak used a 3-0 run to start the second half to defeat Redwood 4-2.

The Hawks (2-0) were down 2-1 at halftime against El Diamante before the second-half spark allowed them to take a 4-2 lead.

Justin Herrera scored two goals. Francisco Gonzalez and Kecxy Castillo each added a goal.

Joey Chica scored all three goals for El Diamante.

Farmersville 7, Woodlake 0: Freddy Vazquez scored three goals and the Aztecs cruised to a nonleague victory over the Tigers.

Pedro Berber and Ramon Franco each added two goals. Franco also had two assists. Johnny Cervantes scored one goal and dished out another assist. Cristian Morales added another goal.

Goalkeeper Ruben Valencia finished with four saves to help preserve the shut out as the Aztecs improved to 2-0 on the season.

Golden West 2, Dinuba 1: Christian Ibarra scored both of the Trailblazers' goals in their win over the Emperors in Visalia. Golden West improved to 1-1.

Mt. Whitney 1, Sanger 1: Jose Solano scored the Pioneers' goal in the 46th minute in a nonleague draw against the Apaches.

Eber Ramirez assisted on Solano's goal. Austin Aguiar had six saves for Mt. Whitney (0-1-1).
