Roundup: Redskins, Pioneers to meet for THC title

The Tulare Union Redskins and the Mt. Whitney Pioneers earned spots in the championship game of the 20th annual Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic by finishing pool play with 3-0 records on Friday

Tulare Union trounced the Central Valley Christian Cavaliers 72-31 at Sim Iness Gymnasium. Mt. Whitney defeated Tulare Western 58-36 at Tulare Western.

Mt. Whitney and Tulare Union will meet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the tournament final.

Tulare Union 72, CVC 31: Jalen Love had a game-high 23 points to lead the Redskins (8-2). Keonta Vernon added 16 points, and Oscar Reyes finished with 13 points.

"It's huge for us," Tulare Union coach Mark Hatton said of the Redskins playing in tonight's final. "We wanted to play at a high level, and we've done that for the last three nights."

Alex te Velde and Tony Dragt each had seven points for CVC (4-4).

Mt. Whitney 58, Tulare Western 36: A key halftime adjustment helped the Pioneers (3-3) overcome a sluggish start to defeat the Mustangs.

Tulare Western bothered Mt. Whitney with inspired 1-3-1 defense during the first half, but the Pioneers gave them a different look during the final two periods that allowed for penetration and timely kick-outs to the perimeter.

"Tulare Western played really hard," Mt. Whitney head coach Bob Aguilar said. "They wanted the ball more. They defended and rebounded."

Jake Eivins led the way for the Pioneers with 14 points, followed closely by Trevor Nelson with 13.

Lindsay 70, Woodlake 67: The Cardinals improved to 8-4 with a win over the Tigers at the Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic.

Lindsay junior Jacob Hernandez was the game's leading scorer with 30 points. Jeff See had 16 points for Lindsay.

Armando Martinez had 15 points to pace Woodlake (0-5). Anthony Lopez and Jacob Castillo each added 11 points.

Golden West 80, Reedley 55: Paul Arreguin finished with a team-high 17 points to lead the Trailblazers in their win over the Pirates at the Dinuba Holiday Tournament.

Anthony Chandler added 14 points for Golden West (2-5), and Troy Stainbrook scored 10 points.

Golden West will play Coalinga in the tournament's fifth-place game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Dinuba.

Edison 99, Mission Oak 77: The Tigers made 10 three-point shots to defeat the Hawks (4-2) at the Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic.

Edison scored 30 points in each of the first two periods. A 30-13 second quarter gave the Tigers a 60-37 advantage at halftime.

Bobby Alvarado paced Mission Oak with 19 points. Austin Molezzo scored 16 and Blake Shannon scored 10.

Dinuba 56, Hanford 54: The Emperors seized a spot in the title game of their holiday tournament with a narrow win over the Bullpups in Hanford.

Ernesto Ruiz poured in 23 points to lead undefeated Dinuba (9-0). Aaron Taylor added 10 points.

Dinuba hosts Exeter at 7:30 p.m. in the tournament title game.

Exeter 45, Hanford West 32: The Monarchs improved to 7-0 and grabbed a spot in the title game of the Dinuba Holiday Tournament with a victory over the Huskies.

Jordan Bayne had a team-high 14 points for Exeter. Caleb Harden added 13 points.

Girls Soccer

Tulare Western 2, Selma 1: Anyssa Dominguez scored both goals for the Mustangs (8-2-1) in a nonleague road win.

The first goal came less than four minutes into the game. Dominguez later doubled the lead with a goal in the 60th minute before Selma cut the lead in half five minutes later.
