Roundup: Pioneers score first win in Tulare Holiday Classic

The Mt. Whitney Pioneers began play in the 20th annual Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament with their first victory of the season, a 56-36 win over the Bakersfield Christian Eagles Wednesday night at Tulare Western High School.

Ethan Moore led Mt. Whitney (1-3) with 16 points. Dannon Frigulti had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sneh Raghu and Tucker Mendonca each had eight points for the Pioneers.

"We're starting to put four quarters together, where we don't give them runs at the end of the quarter. We're starting to play better defense," Mt. Whitney coach Bob Aguilar said.

The Pioneers face Cesar Chavez today. Game time is 6 p.m. at Tulare Western.

Tulare Union 76, Woodlake 17: In their quest for a third straight Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic championship, the Redskins got off on the right foot to the 2012 edition with a win over the Tigers at Sim Iness Gymnasium.

Keonta Vernon had 27 points to lead Tulare Union (6-2). Jalen Love scored 12 points, and Bailey Shaw added eight points.

Armando Martinez had eight points for Woodlake.

CVC 62, Lindsay 47: The Cavaliers topped the Cardnials in a Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic contest at Tulare Union.

Craig Kampen had 14 points for CVC (3-3). Austin Bons and Steve Van Grouw each had nine points for the Cavaliers.

Jeff See paced Lindsay (7-3) with a game-high 16 points. Jacob Hernandez had seven points.

Cesar Chavez 52, Tulare Western 48: David Booker had a team-high 11 points in the Mustangs' Tulare Kiwanis Holiday Classic loss to the Titans. Isaac Martinez added nine points for Tulare Western (0-7).

Mission Oak 83, Roosevelt 50: The Hawks opened up play in the Holiday Invitational Tournament in Fresno with a rout of the Roughriders. Bobby Alvarado poured in a team-high 23 points for Mission Oak (4-0). Blake Shannon added 21 points.

Dinuba 72, Orange Cove 22: The Emperors remained unbeaten with a win over the Titans in the Dinuba Holiday Tournament.

Ernesto Ruiz had a game-high 19 points for Dinuba (7-0). Xavier Jones scored 11 points for the Emperors.

Dinuba hosts Corcoran at 7:30 p.m. today.

Girls Basketball

Tulare Western 54, Hanford West 52: Kayla Cota drained a three-point shot with three seconds left to give the Mustangs (10-2) a nonleague win over the previously undefeated Huskies (10-1) in Hanford.

Dashayla Johnson led Tulare Western with 24 points. She drew a double team on the game's last play and passed it to Cota for the winning shot. The 3-pointer made Cota Tulare Western's second leading scorer with nine points.

Boys Soccer

Woodlake 0, Central Valley Christian 3: Kees Knevelbard scored twice and Blake Jacobi made 10 saves as the Cavaliers (6-4) shutout the Tigers (2-5-1) in a nonleague victory Wednesday night in Visalia.

Josh Victoria and Knevelbaard each scored late in the first half to give Central Valley Christian a 2-0 lead heading into the break. Ben Martin assisted the first goal, while Corey Rosa helped on the second.

Knevelbaard added his second score with an assist from Peter Hilvers.

Up next, the Cavaliers host Mission Oak at 6 p.m. today in Visalia.
