The Mission Oak Hawks overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Frontier 64-51 in Thursday's quarterfinals of the Garces Holiday Hoops Challenge boys basketball tournament.
The Titans outscored the Hawks 15-5 in the second quarter to take a 30-20 lead into the locker rooms. Mission Oak came back by scoring at least twice as many points as Frontier in each of the final two frames.
Freshman Austin Molezzo led the Hawks (11-2) with 19 points. Blake Shannon scored 13, while Bobby Alvarado and Kollan Mundley each netted 10 to give Mission Oak four players in double figures.
The Hawks advance to tonight's semifinals, with tip time set for 7:20 p.m.
Tulare Western 3, Sanger 2: Fernando Estrada and Marcos Hernandez each scored goals and the Mustangs defeated the Apaches in a nonleague match.
Tied 2-2, Tulare Western scored on an own goal with seven minutes remaining to seal the victory.
The Mustangs (5-5-3) will open East Yosemite League play on Tuesday against Delano at home.
"I feel we're right there," Tulare Western coach Michael Capote said about his team's chances in league. "We still struggle to score at times, but we always play quality soccer. We pass the ball around and it is a lot of fun to watch."
Mission Oak 9, Woodlake 0: Liz Cui knocked in three goals to lead the Hawks over the Tigers in a nonleague match in Tulare. Tracy Arevalovs had two goals for Mission Oak (6-4-2).
