High School Volleyball Playoffs: CVC, Redwood remain on track for Division III showdown

The top-seeded Central Valley Christian Cavaliers advanced to the semifinals of the Central Section Division III girls volleyball playoffs with a sweep of the Cesar Chavez Titans Thursday night in Visalia.

CVC defeated the eighth-seeded Titans 25-14, 25-10, 25-11.

CVC (26-8) is in Division III for the first time after having won three straight Division IV titles. The Cavaliers will host a semifinal game Tuesday against the winner of the No. 4 Hoover/No. 5 Sunnyside match.

Lindsey Calvin had a team-high 10 kills against Cesar Chavez. Tess Van Grouw and Taylor Van Den Berg each added nine kills. Van Grouw also had a team-high 18 digs.

Sky Griffin had 23 assists to go with eight digs.

No. 2 Redwood 3, No. 7 Highland 1: The No.Rangers topped the Scots 25-16, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23 in a Division III quarterfinal match Thursday night in Visalia.

Chandler McKean posted 16 kills and nine blocks for Redwood (25-6). Ashley Cervantes had 13 kills and 23 digs.

Ciara Wong had 43 assists to go with 13 digs. Jazmine Gilcrest added seven aces and seven blocks.

Redwood will host No. 3 Ridgeview on Tuesday night. Ridgeview defeated No. 6 Mission Oak in five sets.

No. 3 Ridgeview 3, No. 6 Mission Oak 2: The Wolf Pack edged the Hawks 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-25, 15-6 in a Division III quarterfinal match in Bakersfield.

Alexis Kendrix posted a career-high 27 kills for Mission Oak. Kendrix also had 12 digs and three blocks. Reed Yribarren had 49 assists and five blocks.

Division II

No. 5 Independence 3, No. 4 Exeter 0: The Falcons posted a 25-15, 25-18, 26-24 sweep of the Monarchs in a Division II quarterfinal match in Exeter.

Jacque Hutcheson had seven kills, 15 assists and 19 digs for Exeter (25-6).

Melissa Vernon and Bree Sturgis each added five kills. Amber Atkinson recorded 24 digs.

Division IV

No. 1 Woodlake 3, No. 8 Liberty/Madera 2: The Tigers escaped an upset bid and advanced to the Central Section Division IV semifinals.

Woodlake trailed 2-1 but pulled out a 34-32 win in a marathon fourth set, and controlled the fifth set for a 15-11 win.

"I feel the girls trained for this," Woodlake coach Tori Johnson said. "It was a marathon, but our practice and mindset conditioned us for the victory."

Melissa Samaniego led the way with 19 kills and six blocks, KiAnna Cunningham had 16 kills and seven blocks, Regina Ramirez finished with seven kills and two aces, and Brenda Acosta added 42 assists, two blocks and one ace.

The Tigers will host Sierra on Tuesday.
