High School Sports Roundup: TU tops CVC 3-2 in girls soccer showdown

In a matchup of two programs that have helped define the gold standard for Tulare County girls soccer, the Tulare Union Redskins topped the Central Valley Christian Cavaliers 3-2 in a season-opening match Tuesday at Bob Mathias Stadium.

"We absolutely have had (CVC) on our radar for the last few years. It was nice that we pulled a win against them," Tulare Union coach Marshall Webb said. "I liked the way we play. We were able to control the flow. I felt like we had earned the victory. I was happy to get that monkey off our backs. We've lost to (CVC) over the last few years."

Tulare Union's Kaitlyn Sartuche broke a 2-2 tie by converting a penalty kick with three minutes left in regulation.

Also scoring for Tulare Union (1-0) were Mariah Costa and Isabella Boatman.

Cobi Roeloffs and Alanna Jameson each scored for CVC (0-1).

Redwood 2, Mission Oak 1: The Rangers stopped the Hawks in a season-opening match Tuesday at Mission Oak High School.

Leticia Quintana and Stephanie Funk each scored for Redwood (1-0). Quintana also assisted on Funk's goal. Caitlin Owens recorded four saves.

Reed Yribarren scored the Hawks' lone goal with a penalty kick in the 66th minute.

Mt. Whitney 9, Lindsay 1: Rianna Chavez knocked in four goals to lead the Pioneers over the Cardianls in a season-opening match on Monday in Visalia.

Kendall McGrover added two goals for Mt. Whitney (1-0).

Boys Basketball

Tulare Union 85, Golden West 41: Keonta Vernon poured in 36 points to go with 17 rebounds in helping the Redskins to a win over the Trailblazers at Sim Iness Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Jalen Love, Oscar Reyes and Baily Shaw each added nine points for Tulare Union (1-0).

Anthony Chandler had a team-high 15 points for Golden West (0-1). Joseph Gaytan added eight points.

Garces 72, Redwood 68: Rashad Jackson nailed a 3-pointer with less than a minute left in overtime to propel the Rams over the Rangers in a nonleague game Tuesdsay in Visalia.

Mike Montoya and Ricky Ramirez each had 15 points for Redwood (1-1). Sam Kuiger added 10 points.

Redwood 61, Reedley 46: The Rangers did open their season with a win over the Pirates on Monday in Reedley.

Ricky Ramirez had a team-high 10 points for Redwood. Dom Quintanilla scored nine points.

El Diamante 43, Tulare Western 34: Kentry Bynum had 10 points to lead the Miners past the Mustangs.

Steven Hoover added eight points for El Diamante (1-0).

David Booker had 11 points for Tulare Western (0-2). Robin DeShazer had nine points.

Orosi 49, Woodlake 31: Ronchel Ortal scored 15 points and the Cardinals opened the season with a nonleague win over the Tigers.

Gilbert Avila added a double-double for Orosi with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Woodlake was led by Jaykob Rodriguez with 11 points.

Girls Basketball

Garces 62, Redwood 48: The Rams downed the Rangers in a rematch of last season's Division II semifinals in Bakersfield.

Corissa Turley had 17 points. Jasmine Black and Jordan Surfus each added 12 points for Redwood (1-1).

Redwood 62, Reedley 32: Rebekah Cervantes was 6-of-9 from 3-point range to lead the Rangers to a season-opening win over the Pirates on Monday. Cervantes finished with 18 points. Jasmine Black and Corissa Turley each had 15 points for Redwood.

Golden West 54, Kingsburg 40: Destinee Garcia scored 17 points and the Trailblazers opened the season with a nonleague win over the Vikings

Freshman Jordyn Street added 16 points for Golden West, which plays at Woodlake on Tuesday.

Strathmore 49, RFK 22: Coby Duffin had 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals to lead the Spartans past the Thunderbirds in a season-opening game at Strathmore.

Duffin scored nine of Strathmore's 19 fourth-quarter points. Kandyce and Justyne Gurrola each had eight points.

Boys Soccer

Tulare Western 2, Golden West 1: The Mustangs grabbed a 2-0 lead by halftime, and fended off the Trailblazers in their season opener Tuesday at Tulare Western High School.

Fernando Estrada scored midway in the first half on an assist from Daniel Avalos. Edgar Gamez scored 10 minutes later with an assist from Francisco Rivera.

"It was a good, quality win. Every year we start off with a good, quality game against Golden West. It was good to start the season with a victory," Tulare Western coach Michael Capote said.

Mission Oak 4, Redwood 2: The Hawks scored three unanswered goals to begin the second half en route to a nonleague win over the Rangers Tuesday in Visalia.

Justin Herrera had two goals for Misison Oak (1-0). Sal Palomino and Jorge Beltran each scored a goal.

"The kids played great. Very happy to get off to a winning start," Mission Oak coach Jaime Chavez said.

Lindsay 1, Mt. Whitney 0: The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the 75th minute en route to a season-opening win over the Pioneers on Monday.

Austin Aguiar had five saves for Mt. Whitney.

Farmersville 8, University Prep 0: Pedro Berber scored three goals to lead the Aztecs to a win in their season opener. Sergio Longino added two goals.
