High School Roundup: Vernon scores 33 to help Redskins past Pioneers

The Tulare Union Redskins used strong play over the second and third quarters to post a 66-61 win over the Mt. Whitney Pioneers Tuesdasy night at Mt. Whitney.

Down 15-5 at the end of the first quarter, Tulare Union (2-0) outscored Mt. Whitney (0-1) 46-27 over the next two periods to take a 51-42 lead heading into the fouth quarter.

Tulare Union senior Keonta Vernon scored a game-high 33 points. Jalen Love had 13 points for Tulare Union.

Dannon Frigulti scored 20 points to lead Mt. Whitney. Turner Nelson added 11 points, and Garabed Kalanjian scored 11.

Mt. Whitney is fielding an entirely new starting lineup this season.

El Diamante 55, Golden Valley 45: Sam Tensley scored 16 points and the Miners defeated the Bulldogs in a nonleague game. Sam Luna added 13 points for the Miners.

Selma 64, Golden West 56: Anthony Chandler scored 19 points, but the Trailblazers came up short against the Bears in a nonleague game.

Joseph Gaytan added 10 points for Golden West (0-3).

CVC 81, Orange Cove 8: The Cavaliers scored 54 first-half points and cruised to a nonleague victory over the Titans.

Austin Bons led the Cavaliers with 11 points, and Casey Vanderham added 10 points. Bons also had eight rebounds.

Lindsay 70, Liberty-Madera Ranchos 56: The Cardinals defeated the Hawks to open their season at the Immanuel Tournament.

Jacob Hernandez led the way with 25 points. He was joined in double figures by Gavin Mann with 13 points and Jeff See with 10 points.

Mission Oak 76, Redwood 65: Blake Shannon poured in a game-high 25 points to help the Hawks top the Rangers on Monday night in Visalia.

Bobby Alvarado added 14 points for Mission Oak (1-0). Austin Molezzo, a freshman, scored 13 points.

Patrick Burks and Ricky Ramirez each had 11 points for Redwood (1-2).

Girls Basketball

Golden West 57, Woodlake 29: Destinee Garcia scored 18 points and the Trailblazers defeated the Tigers to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Jordyn Street scored 13 points and Devanee Villegas added 11 for Golden West, which plays at Sanger on Tuesday.

Strathmore 48, Immanuel 32: Abby Vally scored 14 points to lead the Spartans over the Eagles in first-day action at the George Glover Memorial Tournament in Strathmore.

Tulare Union 42, Mt. Whitney 25: Binny Bhakta scored 16 points to lead the Redskins past the Pioneers Tuesday at Sim Iness Gymnansium. Arlene Alexander added 12 points for Tulare Union (3-2).

Boys Soccer

El Diamante 6, Sanger 1: Juan Diego Medina recorded a hat trick and the Miners defeated the Apaches in a nonleague game.

Joey Chica added two goals, and goalkeeper Leonardo Arredondo had six saves.

Tulare Union 2, Redwood 1: Enrique Gutierrez converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute to lead the Redskins over the Rangers. Gutierrez scored both goals for Tulare Union (5-1).

Girls Soccer

Golden West 1, Reedley 1: Kelsey Thomas scored in the second half and the Trailblazers (1-4-1) forced a draw against the Pirates in a nonleague game.

Tulare Western 9, Lindsay 0: The Mustangs trounced the Cardinals on Tuesday at Tulare Western. Anyssa Dominguez scored three goals to lead Tulare Western (3-1-1). Jozlynn Pires and Nicole Mattos each had two goals. .

Tulare Union 3, Redwood 1: The Redskins scored the match's first three goals en route to a win over the Rangers on Tuesday. Kaitlyn Sartuche scored two goals, and Tristin Martin had six saves for Tulare Union (5-2).
