Golden West continues solid start

The Golden West High School baseball team continued its solid start to the 2013 baseball season with a 7-1 victory over Fowler on Tuesday at the Central Valley Diamond Classic.

The Trailblazers improved to 3-1 behind the arm of Thomas Dunehew.

He picked up the victory after throwing 5 1-3 innings and striking out seven.

Offensively, the Trailblazers were led by Tyler Morgan, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Tanner Cooke with 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI, Troy Stainbrook went 1-for-2 with three RBIs and Blain Cox went 1-for-1 with one RBI on a suicide squeeze.

The Trailblazers will play at Mission Oak at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The two teams played a doubleheader over the weekend and split the two games.

Central Valley Christian 2, Firebaugh 1: Shane Marshall hit a walk-off single as the Cavaliers defeated the Eagles in the second round of the Immanuel tournament.

Marshall's two-out, two-run hit came in the bottom of the seventh inning with CVC (2-0) down 1-0. Cole Daniel and Brandt Fees both scored on the play. Firebaugh's only run came an inning earlier in the top of the sixth.

Starting pitcher Caleb Flores allowed only one hit over six innings for the Cavaliers. Brandt Fees was the winning pitcher.

Lemoore 2, Dinuba 1: Dustin Pfarr out-dueled Gene Cachu as the Tigers beat the Emperors in a nonleague game.

Pfarr pitched all seven innings for Lemoore (3-0), allowing only one run in the second inning with eight total strikeouts and four total hits. Cachu threw five innings for Dinuba (2-1), allowing two runs in the second inning with nine total strikeouts.

Cachu and Isaiah Fennell each batted 2-for-3. Fennell drove in Dinuba's only run.

Exeter 3, Strathmore 2: The Monarchs earned their first win of the season against the Spartans in the second round of the Immanuel tournament.

Tucker Barnett was the winning pitcher for Exeter (1-1). Tyler Rumbaugh batted 2-for-3 and Jacob Espinola batted 1-for-2 with two runs batted in. The Monarchs committed three errors on defense. They scored three runs on 10 hits on offense.

Eric Lopez was the losing pitcher for Strathmore (1-1). He batted 1-for-3 with a run. The Spartans did not commit any errors on defense but scored only two runs on two hits on offense.

Merced 2, Tulare Western 1: The Bears scored two runs in the first inning and never gave up the lead in a nonleague win over the Mustangs.

Anthony Avila drove in the only run for Tulare Western (2-3) while batting 1-for-3 and Armando Gallegos scored the only run while batting 1-1 with a double. George Harbour hit 2-for-2. Lumus Russel and Derrick Perales each hit 1-for-3 with a double.

Prep Softball

Mt. Whitney 8, Tulare Union 7: The Pioneers remained undefeated with a nonleague win over the Redskins.

Tulare Union jumped out to an early lead, but Mt. Whitney rallied with four runs in the fourth inning.

Krystin Gilmore batted 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs batted in for Mt. Whitney (3-0). Maddy Forester batted 2-for-4 with a double and Breeanna Vent also batted 2-for-4. Brooke Mendonca was the winning pitcher.

Presley Jaimeson hit 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in for Tulare Union (0-1). Alondra Renteria hit 2-for-2 with a double.

Prep Tennis

Golden West 9, Exeter 0: The Trailblazers remained undefeated with a sweep of the Monarchs in nonleague action.

Juan Carlos Silva, Jesus Zamora, Ernie Alvarado, Matt Duyst, Ben Price and Dillon Barnett each earned singles wins for Golden West (2-0). Silva/Alvarado, Zamora/Duyst and Brandon Romer / Billy Torres won doubles matches.

Buchanan 7, Redwood 2: Miguel Garcia earned the only singles win for the Rangers in a nonleague loss against the Bears.

Zach Madruga and James Choi earned the only doubles win for Redwood (1-1).

Clovis East 8, El Diamante 1: The Miners lost their first match of the season against the Timberwolves in nonleague action.

Prep Girls Swimming

Golden West 109, Exeter 74: The Trailblazers earned a nonleague win over the Monarchs.

Prep Boys Swimming

Golden West 116.5, Exeter 63.5: The Trailblazers earned a nonleague win over the Monarchs.

JC Baseball

COS 4, Merced 3: Chris Calistro singled in Luke Tessman for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Blue Devils in a Central Valley Conference game.

The Giants (8-5, 4-0) led 3-0 before Merced tied it with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Scott Preston batted 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Rudy Navarro and Nick Stoll each batted 2-for-4 with a run.

Ryan Guajardo earned the win. Starting pitcher Dylan Lee allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk over 6 1/3 innings.

JC Tennis

Reedley 5, COS 4: The Giants suffered their first Big 8 South Conference loss against the Tigers.

Jessica Gonzalez, Briana Rodriguez and Serena Ortiz each earned singles wins for COS (4-5, 2-1). Mercedes Alcantar and Ortiz earned the team's only win in doubles.
