St. Petersburg, Fl - It was a battle of unbeaten teams, a battle of south St. Pete vs. south Tampa, a battle for the Class 5A-8 district championship.
The Robinson Knights got things rolling early. Second play from scrimmage, Carlos Duclos took the pitch from quarterback Zain Gilmore and ran untouched 50 yards for the score.
In the second quarter, Robinson (8-0, 7-0) keep things rolling their way. Martin Ruiz ran five yards for a touchdown and Gilmore went 18-yards up the middle, giving the Knights a 19-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, it was the defense for Lakewood (7-1, 6-1) that provided a spark. Rodney Adams game into the game to replace Spartan quarterback Tracy Johnson, who had to leave because of a possible concussion.
Adams' running from the wildcat got Lakewood moving and on the board, when he powered his way in from the three yard line. But that would be the only scoring for either team, with Robinson holding off Lakewood 19-8, securing the 5A-8 title.
Despite the loss, Lakewood wraps up the runner up postion, ensuring them a playoff appearance.
