Durant Cougars perfect 10-0 with 31-0 win over King

3:49 PM, Nov. 10, 2012 EST

Durant, Florida - The Durant Cougars made school history when they beat the King Lions 31-0, posting their first undefeated regular season.

The Cougars wrapped up the Class 7A-District 8 title a couple of weeks ago, but on senior night at the Ron Frost Sports Complex, everyone was focused on the number 10, as in 10-0 and doing something no other Durant football team had done before.

Senior running back Jamarlon Hamilton finished with 91 yards rushing, mostly pounding it up the middle, while junior quarterback Trey Vandergrift tossed two touchdown passes.

With the overall offensive numbers a little lower than usual, the defense stepped up, recording four sacks, an interception and making stops when it mattered most.

The shutout was the fourth of the season for a Durant defense that has allowed only 84 points for the season.

Head coach Mike Gottman says he's very proud of his team's performance this year and their 10-0 season, "I'm so proud of our kids, our seniors.   I don't have a lot to say other then I'm very excited for everyone here at Durant."

After the game Gottman encouraged his players, telling them how awesome it is to go 10 and 0.   Then he challenged his players, that 11 and 0, 12 and 0, 13 and 0 is even more awesome.

After a short game night celebration, Coach Gottman says it's back to work, preparing for next Friday night when the Cougars host Tampa Bay Tech in round-one of the state playoffs.
