Shrine All-Star Game full of area players

A number of local players will play in Saturday's East-West Shrine All-Star Game at Baker City High School. The game starts at 2 p.m. and will be televised by Root Sports Northwest.

Local players on the East team are Central lineman Pete Finnegan, Scio running back Sean Heil and Stayton running back Mitchell Kuenzi.

Local players on the West team are St. Paul linebacker Sam Coleman, Dayton end Hayden Craig and running back A.J. Hedgecock, Perrydale linebacker Joe Hiebenthal and Santiam Christian receiver Alex Hovelsrud and lineman Tyler Ropp.

Local alternates for the East are Regis running back Mo Beitle, Kennedy quarterback Daniel Hammer, Central receiver Donavan Hampton and lineman J.R. King, Stayton lineman Zach Lindeman and Scio running back C.J. Siewell.

Local alternates West are Santiam Christian receiver Anthony Alire and Tim Lane, Amity linemen Jerrett Olson and Gordon Reed, North Marion lineman Tanner Schrenk and Blanchet lineman Dan Smith.

Santiam Christian coach Dave Lange is on the coaching staff for the West team and Scio coach Jim Mask is on the coaching staff for the East team.

Signings

Baseball: Recent West Salem graduate Brandon Groat has signed to play at Chemeketa.

Groat, a second baseman, hit .460 with .576 on-base and .620 slugging percentages as a senior with 11 RBIs and scored 22 runs. He was a first-team all-Central Valley Conference selection and was second-team all-state.

He also was a second-team all-CVC selection as a junior.

He joins West Salem teammates Cody Allison and Ryan Snow in signing to play at Chemeketa.

Basketball, soccer: Western Mennonite graduate Kelli Christenson has signed to play at Hesston College in Hesston, Kan.

As a midfielder in soccer Christenson was a first-team all-3A/2A/1A Special District 3 selection as a senior and junior.

As a guard in basketball the 5-foot-8 Christenson also was a first-team all-Tri-River Conference selection as a senior and junior.

Coaching

Salem Academy: Pete Potloff has resigned as boys basketball coach and athletic director to take a teaching and bible department head position at Cole Valley Christian School in Boise, Idaho.

Jim Stomps and Steve Outslay will oversee Salem Academy's athletic department.

Salem Academy has openings for head coaches for boys basketball and volleyball. Anyone interested in either position can contact Jim Stomps at jstomps@salemacademy.org or Steve Outslay at soutslay@salemacademy.org.

Silverton: Micah Pruss has been hired as boys soccer coach.

Pruss, who played at Western Baptist, formerly was associate head men's soccer coach at Northwest Christian University and JV coach at Bellevue Christian High School as well as an extensive background coaching club soccer.

Santiam Christian: Ron Brooks has been hired as boys soccer coach.

Brooks has coached youth team for 18 years.

A meet-and-greet with him will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 6 at Santiam Christian's cafeteria.
