It is not only the less-preferred path to a region championship but also the less-traveled because it almost always dead ends. Yet, it's worked twice for Reed in the past five years. The second time was Saturday, when the Raiders came out of the losers' bracket and won twice to earn the Division I North softball title and the region's lone spot in the state tournament.

Track & field: Hug senior gives up individual medal shot for spot on relay teams

Track and field athletes are members of a team, but most are focused primarily on individual disciplines. The team aspect comes into play in the form of cheering for teammates -- each finish contributes to the team's points, and hopefully, to a team title. But Hug senior Shaina Carthen put the focus back on the team.
