After competing in 24 rodeos in 12 weekends since late September, the chance to compete at nationals comes down to how Northern Nevada's high school cowboys and cowgirls fare this week.
More than 100 competitors will participate in this year's Nevada State High School Rodeo Association state finals today through Saturday in Fallon.
"This decides who goes to nationals," said Faye Rivera, NSHSRA secretary. "This is what the kids look forward to."
The top four in each event this week advance. Nationals are the third week of July in Rock Springs, Wyo.
Reno's Randi Buchanan, the reining pole bending state champion and the 2010-11 all-around cowgirl, earned a spot at nationals each of the past two years, when the rotating state rodeo was held in Elko.
"This year I want to go into state not worrying about beating the people I compete against, but beating myself and staying calm and collected (and) hoping that my horses and I will perform to the best of our ability," said Buchanan, one of 109 expected to compete this weekend in 13 different events.
