Region wrestling: Spanish Springs grabs opening-day lead

Event favorite Spanish Springs jumped out to the first-day lead at the Division I North wrestling regional Friday at Reno High, scoring 78 points.

The tournament concludes today, with matches beginning at 10 a.m. Finals are scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The Cougars placed wrestlers into the championship semifinals of 11 classes, including two - Ryan Long and Blake Boswell -- at 113 pounds.

McQueen is in second place after the opening day, scoring 59.5 points. The Lancers have wrestlers in seven weights headed into today's final rounds.

Defending region champ Carson was third with 50 points, and was followed by Reed (46.5), North Valleys (41.5) and Damonte Ranch 41. Host Reno is seventh, at 31.5 points.

Among the wrestlers reaching the semifinals were McQueen's James DeLeon (126 pounds), Bishop Manogue's Willy McDonald (138), Reno's Joey Lavallee (145), Damonte Ranch's Drew Smith (160), and Reed's Spencer Empey (220).

At the Division I-A tournament in Winnemucca, host Lowry took the first-day lead with 93 points. The Buckaroos are ahead of Fallon (80.5), Spring Creek (59) and Elko (56) at the top of the points standings.

Lowry placed wrestlers into the semifinals in 13 of the 14 weight classes. Today's final matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Winnemucca Events Center.

The Division III North regional is today at 9 a.m. in Yerington.
