Fans can make their favorite mascot count

Do the Dayton Dust Devils have what it takes? What about the Gabbs Tarantulas?

USA TODAY High School Sports, an RGJ partner, is asking fans to choose the most unique high school sports mascot in the country. Beginning today and through March 25, a best mascot competition will features 255 of the most interesting school nicknames in the country.

There will be three rounds of voting. State round voting runs through March 5. The 51 state winners divided among six regions, and regional voting is March 6-14. The overall winner will be selected among six regional winners during voting from march 15-25.

The winning school will receive $2,000 for its athletic department. Second place will be awarded $1,000, third will receive $500, fourth will take $250 and fifth will be awarded $100.

Eligible Nevada schools include Cheyenne Desert Shields, Dayton Dust Devils, Gabbs Tarantulas, Lowry Buckaroos, Mineral County Serpents. Vote at contest.usatodayhss.com.
