The members of the Millbrook High School volleyball team enjoyed the spoils of victory around campus Monday, as the Blazers and their supporters gear up for the team's regional showdown later this week.
"Today was awesome," coach Shawn Stoliker said after an abbreviated practice. "The school district, the high school, everyone has been so supportive of us this year. The amount of applause we got today was unbelievable.
"The girls are on cloud nine right now. It's been incredible in the school."
Millbrook (21-0) won the Section 9 Class C championship late Sunday, beating Spackenkill by a 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 margin to advance to Friday's 7 p.m. regional semifinal at Carmel. The Blazers will play Section 1's champ, which has yet to be determined.
Sunday's victory in the finals capped 18 hours the Blazers spent together this past weekend, Stoliker said, as his team marched through the sectional tournament. As such, Millbrook enjoyed a light workout Monday after classes.
"We had a lot of volleyball in us (this past weekend), so we kind of went light -- a little bit of serving, a little bit of scrimmaging, then we went home," Stoliker said.
Still unaware of Friday's opponent, Millbrook played Section 1's top seed, John F. Kennedy Catholic, in September's Carmel tournament. The Gaels topped the Blazers in pool play, 25-22, before Millbrook swept Kennedy in the finals, 25-22, 25-22.
"If they come out (of the Section 1 tournament), we know a little bit about them," said Stoliker, adding he doesn't want his Blazers feeling any pressure Friday. "I told them, 'Let's just go out and play.' We're playing with house money."
