Local roundup: Talah Hughes lifts Beacon girls over Cornwall, 46-33

Marlboro gets 49-29 victory over Goshen

Talah Hughes had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead the Beacon High School girls basketball team in a 46-33 home victory over Cornwall as part of the Terrence Wright Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

Beacon, leading by two points after one quarter, broke the game open by winning the second quarter, 19-7.

Brooke Dennin added eight points for Beacon (1-1), including a pair of 3-pointers.

"Today's game was a game where we got contributions from everyone on the court," said Beacon coach Christina Dahl.

Marlboro 49, Goshen 29 -- Taylor Orszewski scored 13 points, while Nina DeFabio added 12 and Angelica DeSantis chipped in 11 points as the Iron Dukes won the championship game at the George McGinnis Basketball Classic in Goshen late Friday.

Red Hook 52, Pine Plains 32 -- Kyla Gabriel scored 17 points, adding two assists and four steals, and Julianne Wilkinson added 15 points and nine steals for the host Raiders late Friday.

Maria Farias scored a team-high 12 points for Pine Plains.

Franklin D. Roosevelt 73, Ellenville 30 -- Ashley Merritt knocked down five 3-pointers on five attempts in the second quarter, as the Presidents eased to a road win late Friday. Merritt, who finished with six 3-pointers, scored a game-high 26 points to go with seven assists.

Allison Pritchard added 14 points for Roosevelt (2-0), which hosts Washingtonville on Wednesday.

Women's basketball

Shannon Walker scored 15 points for SUNY New Paltz in a 73-69 SUNY Athletic Conference overtime victory over visiting Geneseo to improve to 8-0 overall.

Late Friday, freshman Jennifer Sixsmith had a career-high 20 points for the Hawks in an 80-51 triumph over Brockport.

Vassar 72, Berkeley 55 -- Cyndi Matsuoka collected 18 points, six assists and four rebounds for host Vassar in the non-conference game.

Sage 47, Bard 41 -- Tytravia Riley finished with 17 points and 18 rebounds for visiting Bard late Friday.

Men's basketball

Red Hook's Frank Stortini finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for host Bard in an 86-22 win over St. Lawrence.

Hamilton 69, Vassar 54 -- John Donnelly led host Vassar with 13 points, and Jon Herzog and Curtis Smith each added 10.

Geneseo 84, New Paltz 63 -- Matt Devine scored 18 points for host New Paltz in the SUNYAC game.
