The Arlington High School field hockey team ran out of comebacks on Monday.
The fourth-seeded and host Admirals fell to fifth-seeded Mahopac, 4-3, in a Section 1 Class A quarterfinal after tying the game three times. Mahopac's Julia Stack scored the winning goal with 3:34 left in regulation off a penalty corner.
"Mahopac was able to execute their corners," said Arlington coach Stephanie Tito, whose team finished its season with a 12-3-3 record, including two defeats to Mahopac. The other was a 2-1 decision on Oct. 16. "If the game would have kept going, we would have kept going goal for goal."
Mahopac held an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners, with two of its four goals coming off corners.
The teams went into halftime in a 2-2 tie. After the Indians had scored the game's opening goal, Arlington's Lauren Fazio scored with an assist from Emily Kaminsky with 18:11 left in the first half. Mahopac's Sarah Quarto tallied with 7:18 left in the half but was answered by Arlington's Nichole Tolli, who tied the score with 3:51 left before intermission.
Mahopac's Allison Jackson and Arlington's Nina Pettinella exchanged goals early in the second half before Stack's decisive tally.
Tito said she saw tremendous progress in her team this season.
"Today was just a battle back and forth. It was an intense game," Tito said. "I couldn't be more proud of the girls in my program, how hard they worked and the results they had this season."
Mahopac will visit No. 1 Mamaroneck in a Section 1 Class A semifinal today. The winner of that game will complete in the final at 5 p.m. on Thursday in Mamaroneck.
