Prep Roundup: PHS girls' rally falls short in championship

Gibson pours in 24 for PHS

The Pensacola High girls basketball team rallied late against Coral Springs Charter in the championship game of the Queen of Palms Classic in Fort Myers on Saturday, but the Tigers were unable to overcome a slow start and lost 59-56 to finish as the tournament runner-up.

The Tigers (13-2) previously defeated Sebastian River on Friday to advance to the final of the tournament's Ruby Division.

Chelsea Gibson led the Tigers' offense with 24 points, while D'Arcy Draper powered the defense with 10 rebounds and four blocks.

PHS trailed 34-19 at halftime, but bounced back to outscore Coral Springs in both second-half quarters.

The Tigers were best in the fourth quarter, where they outscored Coral Springs 22-15 to narrow the Colts' lead to three before the buzzer.

Raiders fall at Christmas Classic

Gatlin Casey scored 21 points for the Raiders, but Navarre lost to Miami LaSalle 72-61 in the final day of the Catholic Christmas Classic.

The Raiders finished in seventh place.

Gators beat Chiefs, finish in 5th place

The Escambia Gators finished fifth in the Catholic Christmas Classic after defeating Northview 47-41 on Saturday.

Northview's Neino Robinson led all scorers with 20 points, but only three other Northview players scored in the game.

Eight Escambia players made baskets in the Gators' second win in the tournament.

The Gators beat Navarre on Friday, but lost to South Forsyth on Thursday.

Fairhope tops Tate

Fairhope (Ala.) edged Tate 44-42 to claim third place in the Tate Christmas Tournament.

The Aggies led by 1 at halftime, but got off to a slow start in the second half and were outscored 11-3 in the third quarter.

Milton holds off West Florida

Avery McNeal scored two goals in the first half, and it was all Milton needed to hold off West Florida 2-1 at home.

The Panthers play again next Saturday against Pensacola High.
