Crusaders top Marianna for a win in district

The Catholic High's boys basketball team survived a second-half surge from visiting Marianna to pick up their second District 1-4A win of the season Friday night.

The Crusaders (9-6; 2-1) beat the Bulldogs 41-35. Catholic matched Marianna's improved second-half scoring to hold onto the lead they built in the first half.

Nic Bell led the Crusaders with 15 points, and was strong defensively with six steals. Catholic's Emon Smith turned in an impressive all-around performance with six points, five rebounds, five assists, and six steals.

The Crusaders outscored Marianna by eight points in the first half, before both teams improved play in the second half.

The Crusaders face a tough test tonight with a home game against undefeated Pine Forest at 7:30.

Green powers Milton past Pace

Bobby Green scored 20 points to help lift Milton past visiting Pace, 52-33.

The Panthers led by just five points at halftime, but got hot in the second half and outscored Pace 18-7 in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Deon Nelson led the Patriots with 11 points.

Milton returns to the court on Tuesday at Pine Forest, while Pace travels to Washington.

Warriors cruise past W.F. Baptist

Pensacola Christian Academy had no trouble with visiting West Florida Baptist, as they cruised to a 67-33 win.

Jeremy Carlson led the Warriors with 16 points, and Trent Hershberger added 13 points.

Nathan Perrine scored 12 points to lead the West Florida Baptist offense.

PCA plays again on Thursday against the Baker Gators.

Washington wins on final shot

Josh Knight hit a jump shot with 2.4 seconds remaining, lifting Washington High to a dramatic 60-59 victory against Milton in a game played Thursday night at Washington.

Knight led all scorers with 26 points.

Jadon Jones had 15 points and eight rebounds for Washington.

The Wildcats trailed 22-9 after the first quarter, before taking the lead with improved play in the second half.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Chipley rolls Jay

In District 2-1A action, Chipley ran past Jay 61-33.

The Tigers started hot and built up a 26-point lead by halftime. Jay (4-13) rallied in the second half, but couldn't hold off Chipley's district-best offense.

Hillary Hendricks, Emily Russell and Paige Smith each scored six points for the Royals.

The Royals will look to rebound on Tuesday when they host Catholic.

Tigers' trio pounce on Wildcats

Three players scored in the double-digits, and Pensacola High surged past host Washington 67-25.

Kayla Thompson led all scorers with 23 points for the Tigers, while Shamina Hunter scored 19, and Chelsea Gibson added 16.

Thompson also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds and made seven steals.

D'Arcy Draper was strong on defense with seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals for the Tigers.

The victory makes PHS 14-2 overall and 9-1 in District 1-6A.

PHS travels to Navarre on Tuesday. Washington will go to Pace.

Leonard's hat trick lifts Aggies

In a District 1-4A matchup, Madison Leonard netted a hat trick to lift the Tate Aggies over Crestview 3-1 on the road.

Leonard was assisted by Hannah Hargett and Molly Pearce.

Goalkeeper Kayley Bosinger held off the Bulldogs with nine saves.

Heather Daron scored Crestview's lone goal.

Tate returns to the field on Thursday with a home game against Milton, another district game.
