For the fourth year in a row, the 19-and-under girls' soccer team from Indio won the Ontario Cruiser Classic Tournament.
"We went down there, and the girls won for the fourth straight year," head coach Javier Sanchez said. "We played four games, and one of the teams that we beat in the semifinals had to meet us again in the finals."
Well, facing the girls from Indio a second time was just too much for that team, and they forfeited.
"He told me he didn't think there was any way his team could compete with us, so they just gave up," Sanchez said.
Leading the charge at the tournament on June 30 and July 1 for the Indio girls was Raquel Castaneda, who tops the team in scoring.
The top defender was Esmeralda Huerta, who did her part, as the team only allowed one goal the entire tournament.
"And that was on a penalty," Sanchez said about his team's lone lapse.
Throughout the season, the girls have only allowed 11 goals, while scoring 120.
They also have won tournaments at the Redlands Citrus Classic, the Mission Viejo Championship, and lost at the Top Gun Tournament in San Diego in a penalty shootout in the finals -- garnering a second-place finish there.
In their seven-year history, the team has won 27 tournament championships out of 34 tournaments.
Next up for the girls is the Coachella Valley Women's Club League Tournament. The Indio girls have won their first two games, 5-1 and 6-0, in the 10-team tournament.
