Punters dream of the type of play that Saline (Mich.) senior Gage Hammond experienced last Friday. They have nightmares about it, too.
As Hammond prepared to punt late in the fourth quarter of Saline's 31-17 district championship game win over Ann Arbor Pioneer (Mich.), the snap sailed over his head. Hammond raced back to retrieve the ball at his own 17-yard line, eluded would-be-tacklers up the sideline and then cut back across the field. Hammond shook one final Pioneer defender at the 35-yard line en route to an improbable touchdown.
As the Hornets' top receiver, Hammond is no stranger to the end zone. The touchdown was his 10th of the year, but first on a botched punt.
"That's the kind of kid Gage is," Saline coach Joe Palka told AnnArbor.com. "He's a game, he's an athlete. Whenever he touches a ball he's a threat to go the distance."
Hammond and Saline square off against Cass Tech (Detroit) in a playoff matchup tonight.
