Top point guard talks recruiting, "The Fresh Prince" and more

Tyus Jones writes in depth about his recruitment, upcoming visits and more

Tyus Jones is the top-ranked point guard and No. 2 overall prospect in the ESPN60 for 2014. Some analysts consider Jones to be the nation’s top floor general, regardless of class. That kind of clout has heavyweights like Kentucky, Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina and Kansas, among others, all giving chase. Jones, a junior at Apple Valley (Apple Valley, Minn.), has agreed to give USA TODAY High School Sports exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.

What’s up everybody, it’s your boy Tyus Jones here and this is my new blog with USA TODAY High School.

I’m gonna try and give you guys some good stuff up here and let you in on what all goes on in my life so I hope you’ll keep coming back and reading. I’m excited about this!

Right now I’m wearing a splint on my shooting hand. I tore a ligament in my thumb at the beginning of June and played all summer with that. I thought it was just a jammed thumb, but they did an MRI on it and found out it was torn so I had to have surgery on it. I’ll be in this splint for a few more weeks.

Of course that won’t stop me from working on my game though. I’m just gonna strengthen my off-hand even more. I can pretty much do everything as long as it doesn’t involve my right hand.

We started school on Sept. 4. My favorite subject in school is definitely history. I just like to learn about things from the past and how it relates to what we do and how we operate today.

Being in school has definitely made me really ready for the season even more. We start the week after Thanksgiving so we’ve got a little ways to go, but we’ve started open gym so that’s been fun. I just love the competition.

My toughest matchup this past summer was against Dante Exum. He played for Australia and we played against each other at the World Games. He is a phenomenal player; really quick, lanky and long. He’s definitely a guy to watch out for.

Of course you guys want to know about my recruitment, right?

Well, right now my list is Minnesota, Duke, North Carolina, Michigan State, Ohio State, Baylor, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Stanford, Arizona, Iowa, Iowa State and Georgetown. Those are the main ones for me.

Most people ask me when I’m gonna cut my list, but I don’t really have a timetable for that. I think I’ll be cutting that down pretty soon, not sure on how many I’ll cut it down to though.

I’m looking forward to visiting Duke and North Carolina in the next few weeks. I’m excited about that. I’m also working on trying to get out to Kentucky and Kansas pretty soon too. I’ll be at Duke for their Midnight Madness on Oct. 19 then I’ll probably spend a little time there Saturday and head over to North Carolina after.

I’m not sure what to expect, to be honest. I’ve never been there before. I’ve heard that Cameron Crazies are just insane for their team and really loud so I’m looking forward to that. I know they’re famous for chanting the names of recruits they want so I don’t know if they’ll chant my name, but of course I would think that was pretty cool. That would be a good feeling. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for it. Same with North Carolina, I know their fans are really live and that they’ve got a lot of history and tradition so I’m looking forward to seeing the atmosphere there.

My boy Jahlil (Okafor) is supposed to be coming along with me so hopefully we can get down there and have a good time together. I know he told everyone that we’re planning to play together in college and that’s 100 percent true. I think us planning visits together should prove that we’re serious about that. Right now it’s just us two, but we’ve had conversations about trying to bring a few guys with us to form a power class. We haven’t really narrowed down specifically who we’d want, but we’re working on that.

This stuff is all fun for me. I still get excited to talk to these big time coaches. I don’t understand when guys say it’s too stressful. I just love being in this position. It’s a blessing.

Like, for example, I talked to Coach (Jeff) Capel from Duke about the Michigan-Alabama football game just randomly. I talk to different coaches about different stuff like that all the time. Stuff that’s not always about the recruitment.

We called the coaches before the June 15 period and talked to them about how much to contact us because, for the most part, we know where coaches stand as far as how they feel about me. I guess you could say we controlled the process so it hasn’t been bad for me.

Growing up I was a big fan of Minnesota. Then I also liked Michigan State because they were recruiting my older brother Jadee. But I was also a Kansas fan too. Yeah I bounced around a little with that.

OK, so getting away from basketball, most people don’t know that I’m like the biggest fan of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in the world. I have every episode, that’s definitely my favorite show. I think I’m a mix between Will and Carlton on the show. Right there in the middle, haha!

OK, guys that’s all for my first blog. Hope everyone liked it and I hope to see you guys back here soon for my next one.

You’ll hear it all here first. Thanks again for reading.
