A high school football player has been killed in a shooting incident northwest of Dallas.
Multiple local media reports Sunday said 18-year-old Nathan Maki, starting fullback for Denton Guyer High School, was found dead in a pickup truck in a field close to Bowie, about 50 miles northwest of Denton.
The reports cited Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham in saying that police made the discovery after receiving a call about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Associated Press’ calls to Cunningham weren’t immediately returned. The cause of the shooting wasn’t clear, but The Dallas Morning News reported that Cunningham said a rifle was found at the scene and alcohol may have been a factor.
Denton Guyer won the Class 4A, Division I state championship last season.
A statement posted on a team Website and on Facebook said: “Our team, school, community, and most of all the family of Nate Maki, have suffered a great loss.” It asked for supporters’ prayers.
