Simeon and Whitney Young wear "Shoot Jumpers, Not Guns" T-Shirts

Chicago rivals Simeon and Whitney Young met Saturday in a top-10 boys basketball showdown at Chicago State, 10 days after a 17-year-old was shot and killed outside the arena following a game between Simeon and Morgan Park.

During pregame warmups, players on both teams sported T-shirts with the slogan, "Shoot Jumpers, Not Guns."

Chicago police chief Garry McCarthy attended the game, which was broadcast on ESPNU.

"It's about the same security level that we had two weeks ago when the other event happened," McCarthy told WLS-TV Chicago. "It has to do with the size of the crowd. In a nationally televised game, we anticipate a lot of people."

The crowd was treated to an exciting, but low-scoring game. Duke commit Jabari Parker scored 7 points to help Simeon hold off fellow preseason American Family Insurance ALL-USA selection Jahlil Okafor and Whitney Young, 44-41.

After the game, Parker talked about the importance of playing it in Chicago.

“We could have played it somewhere else outside the city, but we didn’t,” Parker told the New York Times. “Those T-shirts we wore were good for kids to see.”

No incidents were reported.
