Devin Booker is arguably the most feared marksman in the country, regardless of class. After a stellar season at Moss Point (Moss Point, Miss.), where he posted 30 points a game, Booker, a junior, has college basketball giants like Duke, Michigan State, Michigan, North Carolina and Missouri, among others, all hot on his trail. He’s agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his everyday life in a monthly blog.
Hey what’s up everybody!
This is Devin Booker from Moss Point, Miss., and I’m excited about starting my new blog with USA Today HSS. I’ll be giving you guys a lot of inside information here and letting you know more about me so I hope you guys come back often to read.
Well, I guess I’ll start with my high school season.
It ended earlier than I wanted it to end for sure. We got put out in the first round of the playoffs to a team that we beat the week before by about 15 points. That was frustrating, but it’s turned out to be OK because now I’m able to take more unofficial visits to colleges before AAU season starts.
I ended up averaging 30 points, seven rebounds and four assists a game this season, but I really wanted our team to finish better. That’s OK, we’re gonna come back even stronger next season.
The first visits I went on after my season ended were to Duke and UNC in the same weekend since they’re so close by each other.
I went to UNC first and when I got on campus I met with Coach (Steve) Robinson and we talked about how I would fit into the system and things like that. He walked me around campus a little bit and then he took me to the Carolina basketball museum. That was one of my favorite parts of the visit because I got to see the history behind Carolina basketball. Just to see all of those legends was crazy!
After that I talked to Coach (Roy) Williams briefly and then I watched him get his team hyped up enough to get a big win.
Me and my dad had a good time at the game.
I talked to the fans that were sitting around me throughout the game. They didn’t really know who I was at first, but when I told them I was on a recruiting visit they were excited.
After the game I talked with Coach Williams for almost an hour. He said I’d really fit into their system and about how they already had their point guard and bigs set, but they were trying to get two more wings. Well, I guess one more now that Justin Jackson committed this week.
He didn’t offer me. He said that he felt like the offer would come soon, but he wanted us to build a closer relationship and he wanted us to build trust in each other.
After that I headed over to Duke and met with Coach K and all of the assistants.
That was cool. They showed me all around and everything was beautiful there.
We went back to the film room and watched films of J.J. Redick and Trajan Langdon and then Coach K told me that he felt in his heart that I’d be a great fit there and that’s when he offered me.
It’s hard to describe how I felt when he said that. It was a dream come true for me.
When we left me and my dad (Melvin Booker) were excited. He just kept saying, “Do you know what just happened? We were sitting there with Coach K!” He wasn’t as heavily recruited in high school so he always tells me that he’s just enjoying watching me go through this process. It’s a blessing.
The next day we went to the game and it was pretty crazy!
The fans definitely knew who I was and they were chanting my name so that was pretty crazy. It was a surreal moment for me. Everyone talks about their fans, but it’s even crazier in person.
The game was great too.
I usually watch my position the most when I’m at a game and I loved how they used Rasheed (Sulaimon). He actually went off that game so I liked to see that. I got a chance to talk to Rodney (Hood) a little too. He’s from Mississippi so that was cool.
After the game I talked to Coach K again and we had another great talk with the assistants.
I loved talking to him.
I knew coming into to that weekend that I wasn’t gonna commit because going to great schools like Duke and UNC you know you’re gonna have a great time so you can’t get caught up in that.
The following weekend I went to Florida and I loved that visit too.
We toured the campus and saw everything, then went to the game.
I got to talk to Coach (Billy) Donovan after the game for a long time. He’d already offered me a while ago, but he just reiterated to me how bad they wanted me. That night I hung out with some of the players and then I left the next morning.
So those were three great visits.
Today I’m headed to Michigan State for the Wisconsin game, and then Sunday I’m going to Michigan for the game against Indiana. That will be fun.
Other than that, I’m just getting ready for the Nike EYBL.
I’m excited to start AAU now. I’m running with the Alabama Challenge again.
OK, well, other than basketball, I’m definitely staying on top of my grades. Right now, I’m in the top 10 in my school academically and I’ve got a 3.9 GPA. I know how important education is and I really like to learn different things.
Right now, I’m writing a research paper about legalizing drugs. I’m against it so I’m writing from that angle. It should turn out to be a pretty interesting paper.
OK guys, well I’ve got to get out of here, but I definitely appreciate you reading my blog and stay tuned for the next one. I’ll give you guys all of the details about my visits to Michigan and Michigan State and I’ll let you know how this paper turns out.
