To build a 34-0 record, Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.), the No. 1 team in the Super 25 boys basketball rankings, had to beat No. 2 Montverde (Fla.) Academy, No. 20 La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.) and Montrose Christian (Rockville).
To win the National High School Invitational April 4-6 at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda, Md., there’s a chance the Pilots would have to beat all three again.
On Monday, ESPN officially released the brackets for the event. Findlay plays Montrose Christian, a team it beat 40-35 in the regular season, in an April 4 quarterfinal. If the Pilots prevail, they would play the winner of a quarterfinal between No. 4 St. Benedict’s Prep (Newark) and La Lumiere. If La Lumiere pulled the upset, it could face Findlay, a team it lost 61-53 to in the regular season, in a semifinal on April 5.
Montverde, if it defeats Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) in a quarterfinal, would next face the winner between No. 12 Ely (Pompano Beach) and No. 5 Prime Prep (Dallas). If Montverde advances to the April 6 final, that could set up a rematch with Findlay, which edged Montverde 62-59 in the regular season.
Besides a potential rematch with Findlay, Montverde could see La Lumiere if both advance to the final. Montverde’s last game was a 57-38 defeat of La Lumiere in the Montverde Invitational.
