From many, there will be one. And while there’s still no guarantee contending athletes will win their own state at this point in the season, a number of elite performers are making a case for Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year consideration. Here’s the scoop on the latest top candidate.
Senior outside hitter, New Castle (Ind.)
Greatness Present: Six games into her senior season, the Trojans changed coaches and didn’t miss a beat -- thanks in large part to the leadership displayed by Gillis, one of the nation’s top outside hitters.
The 6-foot-2 standout has recorded double-digit kills in all but one match, including a 31-kill, 14-dig performance against Indianapolis Bishop Chatard that pushed New Castle’s record to 23-1 last week.
Through 24 matches, Gillis amassed 403 kills and 185 digs. She owned a remarkable .444 hitting percentage and .560 kill percentage.
Greatness Past: The state’s returning Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year totaled 583 kills and 259 digs last season, leading the Trojans to a 33-3 record and a berth in the 2012 Class 4A state tournament.
Greatness Future: Gillis has verbally committed to USC.
