In Mary Cain’s first track race as an unattached runner, the Bronxville junior ran the fastest time ever for a high school girl in the 3,000 meters, indoors or outdoors, winning indoors Saturday at the University of Washington Preview in 9 minutes, 2.1 seconds.

According to ny.milesplit.com and armorytrack.com, it will not be an official national record because the track didn’t have dimensions considered as standard.

But Cain’s time was 15.3 seconds faster than the 9:17.4 Melody Fairchild ran to set the indoor record in 1991 and 6.5 seconds faster than the 9:08.6 Lynn Bjorklund ran to set the outdoor record in 1975.

Cain left the Bronxville program last fall to train with coach Alberto Salazar.
