Shawnee Mission West (Overland Park, Kan.) wide receiver Andre Maloney died today after suffering a stroke during a game Thursday night.
Karla Montoya, Maloney's cousin, told the Kansas City Star that Maloney underwent a three-hour surgery, but doctors were unable to remove the blood clot they discovered in his brain.
“The doctors have told us he will not come out of it, so either he will remain like that, or what will happen is we’ll make a decision to let him be free,” Montoya told the Star. “He wouldn’t like that. He’s been an athlete since the day he could walk. It would be unfair for us to hold onto him.”
Maloney was disoriented and collapsed on the sideline after catching a 63-yard touchdown pass. He was untouched on the play.
Several of Maloney's teammates joined family members in a private waiting room at the hospital on Friday. About 200 Shawnee Mission West students gathered on the football field after school for a vigil.
