Kossuth (Miss.) pitcher Josh Whitaker did.
The senior's RBI single in the top of the 18th inning Sunday lifted Kossuth to a 5-4 win over Independence (Coldwater, Miss.) and into the Class 3A state championship series. The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that the five-hour game was the second-longest in state history. Corinth and Meridian played a 20-inning game in 1979.
Not only did Whitaker deliver the game-winning hit, he also picked up the win for his work on the mound. He came on in relief and worked the game's final 12 innings, closing out Independence with his eighth strikeout.
Kossuth will face Sumrall in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
