Jahlil Okafor is the top-ranked center and No. 1 overall prospect in the ESPN 60 for 2014. This past summer, Okafor, a 6-foot-10 junior at Whitney Young (Chicago), led Team USA to the FIBA U17 WorldChampionship and took home MVP honors. That makes Okafor one of the most sought after prospects in the country, regardless of class, with heavyweights like Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio State and Texas all in hot pursuit. Okafor has agreed to give USA TODAY HSS exclusive access into his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to his every day life in a monthly blog.
What’s up guys!
I’ve been away for a while because, to be honest with you guys, I don’t take losses too well. We’ve lost a couple games here lately and I just basically turned my phone off and stayed to myself.
I’ve always been like that.
I remember when I was younger I would always cry after we lost a game. I’m just really competitive and I never expect to lose so when it happens it takes a lot out of me.
When we lost to Simeon a few weeks back I can’t even express the pain that I had. I just stayed in my room and thought about that game. Then we lost the next game because we had a few key guys out.
But we’re back on track now.
We won Wednesday night against Orr. That was the last team to beat us so we got a little revenge there.
I had 26 points and 13 rebounds so it feels good to be back on track. We’ve got a big game against Morgan Park tonight for the city title.
We’re really focused. So I feel good headed into this game.
Of course I’m staying in touch with a lot of the coaches that are recruiting me.
Recently, I’ve talked to Coach (John) Groce from Illinois and I talked to Coach K after the loss to Simeon.
He definitely made me feel a little better. It was really helpful. He was just saying that it was amazing seeing me and Jabari (Parker) go head-up, but that he was really mad because the refs weren’t really letting us play. We stay in touch pretty regularly.
I talk to all of them pretty regularly.

Kentucky is one that I haven’t heard from in a while. Not since the tournament in West Virginia in Janurary. They reached out a few days after that, but I hadn’t heard since then. I’m still very interested in them though. I think people thought that when Dakari Johnson and Karl Towns committed there that it would turn me off, but I’m just wired different. That actually helps them because I want to compete against the best every day. That’s the only way to get better.
I haven’t talked to Coach (Roy) Williams lately, but I have talked to Kansas. Ohio State is another school that always stays in touch with me too.
I think Baylor may be the most original here lately. They know how much I love dogs so they’re always talking to me about Pierre Jackson’s puppy. I like those talks. I’m a big dog lover!
I think my favorites are Golden Retrievers, Labs, Rottweilers and Siberian Huskies.
I always say it’s a blessing to be able to talk to all of these elite coaches and learn from them during this process.
OK guys “Pretty Little Liars” is back on TV now and hopefully you guys have been keeping up. I am a little behind but I am catching up on that this week. I’ll have a report on that in my next blog.
Well, thanks again for reading you guys.
We’re gonna go out and try our hardest to win this city title so check back soon for my next blog and I’ll tell you all about it.
Check you later.
