Elite HS players say they could top Jake Taylor's 138 points

Given 108 shots, Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas) star Julius Randle says he'd score more than 200 points. / AP

When Huntington Prep (Huntington, W.Va.) shooting guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes heard about Division III Grinnell College point guard Jack Taylor scoring an NCAA-record 138 points in the Pioneers’ 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible Tuesday night, Rathan-Mayes had a typical reaction.

“Shocked,” Rathan-Mayes said. “It takes an unconscious player to take 108 shots. That definitely got my respect.”

It also got his and other elite high school players’ minds racing; wondering what they would drop given the opportunity to take 108 shots in a game.

We caught up with a handful of elite scorers and had them chime in, and yes, all agreed that their point total would be north of 138.

Give me 108 shots and I’d have: “Definitely 200-plus because I shoot a high percentage and get fouled a lot. I’d get a lot of points from the foul line too.”

Give me 108 shots and I’d have: “Probably 160 or somewhere around there. Just depends on how hot I am.”

Kameron Chatman, Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.), 2014

Give me 108 shots and I’d have: “About 140 or so. I don’t know, it’s hard to imagine taking 108 shots in a game.”

Brannen Greene, Tift County (Tifton, Ga.), 2013

Give me 108 shots and I’d have: “About 180! Obviously I’d be super hot if I had the nerve to take that many shots.”

Damon Harge, Christian Faith Center Academy (Creedmoor, N.C.) 2018

Give me 108 shots and I’d have: “I’d say about 175 points because the defense would probably start tripling me after a while.”

Devin Booker, Moss Point (Moss Point, Miss.), 2014
College:

Give me 108 shots and I'd have: "About 180. We were talking about this earlier at practice, but I'd get hot taking that many shots and once I get hot I don't miss. Most of them would be threes and I would probably had more free throws than him."

Isaiah Lewis, Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.), 2013
College:
Undecided
Give me 108 shots and I'd have: "Probably 175. That dude (Taylor) is a 'bucket-getter,' but I'd definitely have more with those shots."
