THE WINNER: Dakota Grossman

THE BASICS

School: Seabury Hall (Makawao, Hawaii)
Grade: Junior
Height: 5-foot-7

Athletic achievement: She raced to her third straight individual state championship this past season with a time of 20:21.85, leading the Spartans to a fifth place finish as a team. The 2010-11 and 2011-12 Gatorade Hawaii Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year, Grossman was the state’s fastest competitor at the Foot Locker West Regional championships, earning 63rd place in 20:05.

Academic excellence: Grossman has maintained a 3.61 GPA in the classroom.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of multiple charity road races and has served on her school’s student council.

THE PRAISE

“Dakota Grossman proved every time she raced that there’s no one in her class in the state,” said Chet Blanton, head coach at Iolani (Honolulu, Hawaii). “Even when she’s not at her best, she is still the best.”

THE FUTURE: Grossman will begin her senior year of high school this fall.
