Georgia high school student dies after getting trapped in rolled-up wrestling mat

Kendrick Johnson, a sophomore who played football at Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.), was found dead inside the school gym on Friday after getting trapped upside down inside a rolled-up wrestling mat.

Investigators told WALB they believe Johnson was trying to retrieve a piece of clothing in the mat, which was upright, and became stuck. Johnson's father told the television station that he believes his son was murdered.

"He was last seen third block going to fourth block, he was seen no more," Kenneth Johnson said. "Then again, I want to express how did my son go missing during school hours in broad daylight? We know our son was murdered while he was at Lowndes High School. We do know that."

A preliminary autopsy report showed no signs of injury to Kendrick Johnson's body, according to WALB. Investigators told the station a final autopsy report will take up to 30 days.
