Maine coach charged with assault

Former Messalonskee (Oakland, Maine) football coach Wes Littlefield has been charged with assaulting one of his players, according to the Morning Sentinel.

On Tuesday, a week after a misdemeanor assault charge was filed against Littlefield for allegedly hitting one of his players, Chapin LaBelle, a longtime assistant football coach at Messalonskee and Skowhegan high schools, was named as Messalonskee's interim coach.

Littlefield resigned as Messalonskees coach on Thursday. He owns a gym in Messalonskee and its website says he has a mixed martial arts record of 2-1 and a boxing record of 10-1. According to the Morning Sentinel, Littlefield previously said the episode was "a little incident with a kid that was blown out of proportion." He declined comment on Tuesday.

Littlefield's next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 20 in the Waterville District Court.
