FLEMING ISLAND —

Officials in North Florida say at least eight Fleming (Orange Park) football players face felony burglary charges stemming from a Memorial Day weekend burglary.

Clay County Sheriff's officials say the players entered the home through a door that was left unlocked when the family left for a trip to Alabama over the holiday weekend. Six of the players are 17, the other three are 16. In all, 11 juveniles were arrested in connection with the burglary, not all of them football players.

The Florida Times-Union reports the home was ransacked and items worth $5,150 were taken. The stolen property includes a shotgun, a rifle, electronics and a television.

Principal Tom Pittman told the newspaper that students charged with felonies are not allowed to participate in athletic activities, including the summer football program.
