News and notes from high school sports around the country

6:05 PM, Sep. 25, 2012 EDT

Edison (Fresno, Calif.) defensive back Marquis Sutton was shot and killed Monday night while walking near a busy intersection in Central Fresno.

The shooting occured at around 7 p.m., not long after Sutton had practiced with Edison.

"I just left that kid after practice at 6:30 p.m.,” Edison football coach Ricky Manning Jr. told the station.”And I got this news before I made it home. This is devastating for our team and our community."

Edison planned on having grief counselors available on Tuesday.

"He doesn't bother anyone,” Sutton’s brother, Vincent Andrews, told KFSN-TV Action News in Fresno. “He just plays football for Edison High School. I don't know what happened. This is senseless."

On Tuesday afternoon, the station reported that an arrest had been made in the shooting.

Vonleh Reclassifies

New Hampton Prep (New Hampton, N.H.) forward Noah Vonleh made the jump from the Class of 2014 to his original Class of 2013 Monday afternoon. Vonleh, who is ranked No. 7 in the ESPN100, told ESPN.com that once he changes an English class he would be ready academically.

Just three months ago, Tilton (Tilton, N.H.) scoring guard Wayne Selden made the same move from 2014 back to his original Class of 2013.

“I chose to go back because I felt like I was ready physically and academically,” said Selden, who is ranked No. 14 in the ESPN100. “I just feel like if we’re ready there’s no need to wait.”

Ohio State, North Carolina, Indiana and Kansas, among others, are all in hot pursuit of Vonleh, who plans to take the SAT in October.
