A brawl broke out during a boys 1,600-meter relay at the Hispanic Games in New York City on Saturday. The altercation, which can be seen in the video above, came after Mount Vernon sophomore Rai Benjamin collided with a Thomas Jefferson runner and was then taken down by another Thomas Jefferson athlete.
Both teams were suspended for Sunday's events, which were held at The Armory. After officials reviewed video from the meet, Mount Vernon was reinstated, while Thomas Jefferson was banned from The Armory for a month.
“We at The Armory feel [Thomas Jefferson's athletes] were the instigators in the fight and therefore should be punished more severely than Mount Vernon,” meet director and director of high school track and field Tim Fulton said in an email to LoHud.com.
A spectator's view of the brawl can be seen in the video below, which features a lot of yelling and some inappropriate language.
Thanks to The Big Lead for the heads up.
