Assistant hoops coach dismissed after allegedly asking player to 'take out' opposing team's coach

MassLive.com reports that Eric Wheeler, an assistant basketball coach at Amherst (Mass.) Regional, was dismissed by the school on Thursday following an investigation into allegations that Wheeler directed Amherst Regional player Tyrell Jackson to run into an opposing coach during a game on Monday.

You read that right.

According to a statement by the Amherst school superintendent's office, "it was learned that Amherst Assistant Coach Eric Wheeler suggested such an action to the student involved."

Jackson, who twice ran into South Hadley coach Jeff Guiel on Monday, was suspended following the game.

“[Amherst Regional head coach Jim Matuszko] definitely knew that I was going to do it when I went in,” Jackson told MassLive.com. “As I went in Wheeler said, ‘Take him out,’ and Matuszko heard (but) didn’t say anything."

Teammates backed up Jackson's claim.

And just why would Wheeler ask one of his own players to run into the opposing team's coach? He was reportedly upset that Guiel wandered onto the court during the game.
