I'll admit I was a little skeptical when I stumbled across the YouTube video above titled, "Most AMAZING Finish to a High School Football Game EVER!!". I half expected to be Rick Roll'd, but I was wrong.
Friday's thrilling finish between Topsail (Hampstead, N.C.) and East Duplin (Beulaville, N.C.) is a classic reminder that celebrations are best saved for after the game is over -- completely, totally, officially, clock-at-zero, whistle-blown over.
Here's what happened: Trailing 21-20 with only a few seconds to play, host East Duplin lines up for a potential game-winning 35-yard field goal attempt. Topsail brings pressure from the edge and blocks the kick, and several Pirates players begin celebrating on the field. Meanwhile, an astute East Duplin player picks up the ball, which has rolled back to the Topsail 40-yard line (and is still live, mind you), and races untouched down the right sideline for the game-winning score.
East Duplin 26, Topsail 21.
AMAZING indeed, Mr. YouTube uploader.
