The 2013 high school football season started with a bang and, for Walker and Cullman, began with a brawl.
Coaches and players from both teams fought at midfield after Cullman's 13-10 victory Friday in Jasper.
Police helped break up the fight, the Cullman Times and Jasper's Daily Mountain Eagle reported, and Cullman defensive coordinator Matt Hooper emerged with a bloody face and ripped shirt.
Walker coach John Holladay and Cullman coach Mark Britton did not speak to the media afterward.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association is investigating. So are Jasper police, who have asked the public to share any pictures and/or video, the Cullman Times reported.
"We will listen to people on both sides and make a ruling based on our by-laws,” AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese told AL.com.
The two schools have a history.
Cullman, which opened last year with a 42-14 win over Walker, also beat Walker 30-0 in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
The teams nearly brawled late in the postseason game, according to the Cullman Times, with Cullman players skipping the traditional postgame handshakes.
