Tracy Smith was the baseball coach at Miami of Ohio for eight years before arriving at Indiana University. Good thing he kept a few friends back in southwestern Ohio. They told him about a stocky, slugging, left-handed catcher who was being largely overlooked by most college programs.

Chad Gilbert is walking away from a dream coaching job for his ultimate administrative position. Gilbert, who has coached boys' and girls' basketball for 13 seasons at Jeffersonville High School, was hired as athletic director at Charlestown -- his alma mater.

1. Elkhart Central defeats Cathedral, 1-0, to win baseball championship

Ashe Russell was brilliant in Saturday's IHSAA Class 4-A state baseball championship against Elkhart Central at Victory Field, but the sophomore's six masterful innings weren't enough for Cathedral to win its third title and complete an undefeated season.
